Bike Ride History
The Macmillan Dorset Bike Ride was started in 1989 by Peter Smith-Nicholls, the year after he cycled from John O'Groats to Land End following the death of his father from cancer. The Macmillan Dorset Bike Ride is Peter's way of continuing the fund raising he started in 1988 when he cycled the length of the country.
Forty two people took part in the very first Macmillan Dorset Bike Ride, and between them raised £2,500. The event now attracts around 700 cyclists. Since 1989 the Macmillan Dorset Bike Ride has raised in excess of £1,000,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support, all of which has gone towards supporting people living with cancer.
In 2011 over £100,000 was raised in Macmillan's centenary year and in 2013 the event celebrated 25 years of fund rasising success.
In 2018 the event will celebrate 30 years and is encouraging all of its supporters to GIVE 30 in its 30th year.
